Ep. 73 | How to Fundraise for a Building Campaign Without Losing Donor Interest

Fundraising for a building can feel… harder than everything else.

Because it’s not naturally compelling.

It’s not a person with a story.

It’s not something emotional on the surface.

It’s a building.

And when you try to talk about it, you can feel it fall flat.

You explain the plans.

You describe what it’ll look like.

You share the logistics.

But it doesn’t really connect.

Why Building Campaigns Feel So Hard to Communicate

People don’t emotionally connect to buildings.

They understand them.

They might even think they’re important.

But they don’t feel anything toward them.

And that’s the gap.

Because fundraising doesn’t move forward on understanding alone.

It moves on connection.

So How Do You Actually Fundraise for a Building Campaign?

You don’t try to make the building more exciting.

You shift what you’re actually talking about.

1. Treat the Building Like a Tool—Not the Focus

The building matters.

But it’s not the main thing.

It’s just the thing that makes something else possible.

So if your message is centered on:

“We need this building…”

“We’re raising money for this structure…”

It’s always going to feel flat.

Because the building isn’t the story.

2. Make the People the Center of the Story

This is the shift.

Donors connect with people.

So your job is to connect the building to the people it impacts.

Who are they?

What are they experiencing right now?

What’s not working without this building?

That’s where the emotion comes in.

3. Show What Changes Because of the Building

Don’t stop at:

“We’ll have a new space.”

That’s not the win.

The real win is what happens because that space exists.

What becomes possible?

What changes in someone’s life?

What couldn’t happen before—but now can?

That’s what your donor is actually saying yes to.

4. Show What Happens If Nothing Changes

Most campaigns only show the positive side.

But that’s only half the picture.

What happens if this building doesn’t get built?

What continues?

Who is affected?

What is missed?

When you show both sides—

The impact and what’s at stake—

It becomes real.

This Is What Makes People Say Yes

It’s not the building.

It never was.

It’s the people.

It’s the transformation.

It’s the impact.

It’s what God is doing through your ministry.

The building is just the vehicle.

If You’re Still Not Sure How to Talk About Your Campaign

This is where most people get stuck.

You know the need.

You believe in it.

But putting it into words in a way that actually connects?

That’s the hard part.

That’s exactly what I help ministry leaders do.

We take your specific campaign and build a clear message so you know exactly how to talk about it—whether it’s in a conversation, email, or presentation.
