Ep. 101 | Fundraising Is Exhausting; Here Are 3 Ministry Rhythms To Build Ministry Support

‍ ‍

Does your fundraising have two settings?

Either you’re completely focused on ministry and hardly think about fundraising…

Or you’re in full fundraising mode because support is getting low.

If you’ve ever bounced between those extremes, you’re not failing. You’re missing a rhythm.

Healthy fundraising isn’t built during emergency fundraising seasons. It’s built through simple, consistent habits that strengthen relationships long before you need additional support.

Here are three shifts that can make fundraising feel much more sustainable.

1. Change Your Mindset About Fundraising

Many missionaries think of fundraising as something they have to do so they can keep serving.

While that’s true, it’s incomplete.

Fundraising isn’t primarily about getting people to support you.

It’s about inviting people to participate in what God is already doing.

That perspective changes everything.

Instead of hoping someone feels obligated to give, you’re offering believers the opportunity to become part of the ministry God has called you to.

One of my favorite passages is 2 Corinthians 8, where Paul talks about the Macedonian churches. Even in severe hardship, they “urgently pleaded” for the privilege of participating in God’s work.

They weren’t being pressured.

They wanted to join.

That’s the invitation we’re offering supporters today.

When that mindset settles in, fundraising becomes far less awkward because your responsibility is simply to communicate the opportunity clearly.

2. Build Consistent Relationship Rhythms

Most fundraising stress comes from inconsistency.

Life gets busy.

Ministry demands your attention.

Weeks turn into months without communicating, and eventually fundraising becomes urgent again.

Instead of waiting until support feels low, build simple rhythms that keep relationships healthy all year long.

That could look like:

  • Monthly newsletters

  • Regular social media updates

  • Personal follow-up messages

  • Occasional phone calls

  • Simple thank-you notes

Consistency keeps your ministry fresh in supporters’ minds.

More importantly, it reminds them that they’re making an impact.

People rarely stop giving because they suddenly dislike your ministry.

Often, they simply lose connection because they haven’t heard from you in a long time.

Small, regular touchpoints prevent that.

3. Help Supporters See Their Role

Many ministry updates unintentionally make the missionary the main character.

“We did this.”

“Our ministry accomplished that.”

“Thank you for supporting us.”

There’s nothing wrong with those statements.

There’s simply a better way.

Show supporters the part they played.

Instead of saying:

“Thanks for supporting our ministry.”

Try saying:

“Because of your generosity, this family heard the Gospel.”

“You helped make this possible.”

“Your partnership allowed this ministry to happen.”

Those small wording changes help supporters recognize that they aren’t watching ministry from the sidelines.

They’re participating in it.

When people see themselves in the story, they stay connected to the mission.

Which Rhythm Should You Start With?

If one of these stood out immediately, that’s probably where to begin.

If not, spend a few minutes asking God which area needs your attention first.

A healthier mindset leads to healthier communication.

Consistent communication builds stronger relationships.

Stronger relationships create sustainable fundraising.

Those three rhythms work together.
