Ep. 80 | How to Get Donors to Say Yes Faster in Ministry Fundraising

Have you ever wondered why some people hear about your ministry and support right away… while other people take years?

Maybe you’ve thought:

“I just wish I could find the people who immediately connect.”

Or maybe you’ve wondered if there’s some perfect phrase or fundraising strategy that suddenly makes people say yes faster.

Because waiting years for support can feel exhausting.

I was recently talking with another ministry leader who told me about a church they had been communicating with for over four years before the church finally said yes to supporting them.

Four years.

And honestly, that sounds incredibly discouraging.

Now sometimes, certain relationships really do take time. God works differently in every situation. But I also don’t believe it has to take years for every donor to finally trust your ministry enough to give.

There are specific things that help supporters say yes faster.

Stop Trying to Talk to Everyone

One of the biggest mistakes ministry leaders make is assuming everyone they talk to should eventually become a donor.

But that’s simply not reality.

Some people are not your ideal donor.

They may appreciate your ministry. They may think the work is good. But they may never deeply connect with the specific need your ministry meets.

That’s why understanding your ideal donor matters so much.

In marketing, businesses often create something called an ideal client avatar. They define the exact type of person most likely to connect with what they offer.

Your ministry needs something similar.

Think about your best supporter right now. The person who has stayed loyal for years. The person who always understands the vision, communicates consistently, and genuinely cares about the mission.

Now imagine having one hundred donors like that.

What would change for your ministry?

Probably everything.

Once you understand who your ideal donor is, your messaging starts changing. Your stories become more focused. Your communication becomes more intentional. Even your strategy changes because you start thinking differently about where your ideal donor spends time and how to reach them.

Instead of trying to convince random people to care, you start speaking directly to people who already care deeply about the problem your ministry solves.

And when someone already cares about the need, they say yes much faster.

Clarity Helps Donors Say Yes

The second major issue is clarity.

Confused donors rarely give confidently.

Your supporters need to understand three things quickly:

  • what problem your ministry solves

  • how your ministry solves it

  • how they can help

Many ministry leaders stay too vague in their communication.

“We help families.”

“We serve communities.”

“We share the Gospel.”

Those statements may be true, but they don’t create a strong mental picture.

A donor needs clarity.

What exactly is happening?

Who is struggling?

What changes because your ministry exists?

Then they need to understand how your ministry actually solves that problem.

Not vague language. Real transformation.

How are people moving from point A to point B because of the work your ministry is doing?

And finally, donors need a clear call to action.

This is where many ministry leaders hesitate. They explain the ministry but never directly invite people to respond.

Donors need direction.

Sometimes the next step can be as simple as:

“Become a monthly partner here.”

“Help provide this for one family.”

“Give here to help meet this need.”

People are far more likely to act when the next step feels simple and obvious.

Build Trust Faster

One of the biggest reasons donors delay giving is because trust has not fully formed yet.

And trust matters deeply in fundraising.

Especially if someone is considering monthly support.

People want confidence that your ministry is trustworthy, clear, and capable of doing what you say you’re doing.

The good news is that trust can be built intentionally.

Clarity builds trust.

Consistency builds trust.

Stories build trust.

Showing up regularly builds trust.

When donors hear from you consistently, see real impact stories, and understand the mission clearly, your ministry stays top of mind.

That trust forms faster.

And faster trust often leads to faster yeses.

Fundraising Does Not Have to Feel This Heavy

A lot of ministry leaders feel stuck in the same cycle year after year.

They struggle to explain the ministry clearly. They aren’t sure what words to use. They feel awkward asking for support. They keep hitting the same wall over and over again.

But fundraising becomes much lighter when your message becomes clear.

When you know who you’re talking to.

When your communication emotionally connects.

When donors immediately understand the need and how they can help solve it.

That’s exactly what I help ministry leaders do through coaching.

We work through your specific ministry, your donor messaging, your storytelling, and the exact words that will help your communication become clearer and more effective.

Because the goal is not pressure.

The goal is clarity.

And clarity helps the right donors say yes faster.
